Here's a simple recipe for homemade elderberry syrup:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh or dried elderberries
- 3 cups water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 cloves
- 1-inch fresh ginger (sliced)
- 1 cup raw honey (or sweetener of choice)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Elderberries:
Fresh Elderberries- remove the stalks and any leaves, shake out to remove any bugs or cobwebs, rinse well. Tip: Use a fork to help remove berries from stalk
Rinse the dried elderberries thoroughly under running water.
2. Gently bring the Elderberries to boil: In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon stick, cloves, and fresh ginger.
3. Simmer the Mixture: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer. Let it simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the liquid has reduced by almost half.
4. Mash and Strain: Using a potato masher or the back of a spoon, gently mash the elderberries to extract as much liquid as possible. Once done, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Allow it to cool slightly.
5. Add Sweetener: Once the liquid has cooled down to a warm temperature, add the honey (or your preferred sweetener) and stir until it's well incorporated.
6. Bottle and Store: Pour the elderberry syrup into sterilized glass bottles or jars. Make sure they are airtight. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to a few weeks.
Usage:
- Take 1 tablespoon of the elderberry syrup daily as a dietary supplement to potentially support the immune system during cold and flu season. If feeling under the weather, some people might take it more frequently.
Elderberry syrup is known for its potential immune-boosting properties, but it's essential to note that this recipe is for homemade use and not a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment.
